Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Statistics

The Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Statistics is a comprehensive four-year undergraduate program structured over eight semesters, designed to equip students with essential skills in data collection, analysis, interpretation, and presentation. The curriculum covers core areas such as probability theory, statistical inference, regression analysis, experimental design, sampling techniques, and computational statistics, alongside supportive courses in mathematics, economics, and computer science. Students also engage in practical research projects and internships to apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts. The program emphasizes the use of statistical software and aims to produce graduates capable of supporting evidence-based decision-making in various sectors including government, health, business, and research. Upon completion of 250 ECTS credits, graduates are awarded a Bachelor of Science Degree in Statistics, prepared for roles as statisticians, data analysts, or further academic pursuits.

MSc in Applied Statistics – April 2008

The Master of Science in Applied Statistics at Hawassa University is a two-year full-time program, with a part-time option available for up to four years. The program offers both thesis and non-thesis tracks, requiring the completion of 35 and 38 credit hours, respectively. The curriculum includes core courses in statistical theory, linear models, and data analysis, supplemented by a broad selection of electives in areas such as biometry, econometrics, and time series analysis. Students in the thesis track complete a 6-credit research thesis, while those in the non-thesis track undertake a 3-credit research project. The program is designed to develop advanced analytical skills applicable to research, academia, and high-level consultancy roles across various applied fields.

MSc in Statistics (Biostatistics) – September 2020

The MSc in Statistics with a specialization in Biostatistics at Hawassa University is a two-year full-time program, extendable up to four years for part-time students. This specialized program aims to produce highly qualified biostatisticians capable of addressing complex challenges in public health and biomedical research. It requires the completion of 41 credit hours, including core courses in advanced statistical inference, linear models, survival data analysis, and epidemiological methods. The program culminates in a 6-credit thesis focused on health-related or biomedical topics. Graduates are equipped to analyze and interpret medical and public health data, preparing them for careers in research institutions, health organizations, and doctoral studies, while helping to fill the regional gap in biostatistical expertise.

PhD in Statistics – 2010

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Statistics program at Hawassa University is a rigorous research-focused degree designed to be completed in a minimum of three years for full-time students, with an optional one-year extension upon approval. The program comprises at least 16 credit hours of coursework 10 credits of core courses and 6 credits of electives along with a 12-credit dissertation. Students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 and successfully pass a comprehensive oral examination before advancing to the dissertation phase. The dissertation must be publicly defended and evaluated by both internal and external examiners. The program is intended to produce highly competent statisticians capable of independent research, graduate-level teaching, and leadership in statistical consulting and project management.
