About the Center
The Botanical garden of Hawassa University was officially accepted and established under college of natural and computational sciences in July 2022. It is located in the main campus of Hawassa University, lies between altitude range 1702-1736 masl. Geographically it is located at Latitude 7003’33’’N and Longitude 38030’15’E holds an area of 10 hectares. It is an-ex-situ conservation site dedicated to collection, cultivation and display of a wide range of medicinal, ornamental, indigenous and other economically important plant species. The major functions of the botanical garden includes
- Provide practical learning for students at different levels of education
- Enhance biodiversity conservation and offer a better security for threatened plant species
- Conduct research in different plant species especially focusing on medicinal plants and other economically important plants
- Provide recreational service to the university community and the public at large contributing towards the formation of healthy society.

Mission, Vision and Objectives of HU Botanical Garden include the following
Mission
To promote the natural flora of Ethiopia; to rescue threatened plants from extinction, maintain the highest standard plant collection that contributes towards research, education and provide appropriate recreational opportunities to the public.
Vision
By 2030 become one of the best university botanical gardens in Ethiopia
Objectives
- To promote on site teaching of both undergraduate and postgraduate students
- To create additional space for research in different fields of Biology (such as Botanical Sciences and Biotechnology)
- To conserve threatened plant species in the local flora
- To provide raw materials for researches in the area of botany, phyto-chemistry and other related fields
- To create recreational site for the university community and to the public at large
- To supply seedlings of useful plants to the community
Plant collections
The
botanical garden contains a variety of plant collections including medicinal,
aromatic, ornamental, indigenous and other plants of economic importance like
enset, sugarcane and banana.
