Welcome to the  Department of Physics

The Department of Physics, under the faculty of natural sciences, has launched an undergraduate program in applied physics in the year 2000, a two-year graduate program leading to MSc Degree in Material Sciences in 2009/10 academic year and MSc Degree in Physics (in different specialisations) in 2010/11.

Since its establishment the Department has contributed a great deal in fulfilling the country’s manpower demands in various areas, particularly to educational institutions at different levels. It is also perhaps worth mentioning that many graduates of the Department have successfully completed their MSc and PhD studies at various Universities.

Our Programs

Programs under the Department of Physics

Undergraduate program

  • BSc in physics

The Physics BSc graduates are expected to acquire problem-solving and abstract thinking skills. These qualities make Physics graduates highly desirable professionals for various services and careers across a wide range of science and technology innovations.

After completing the BSc  in Physics, graduates are capable of undertaking duties and responsibilities in a wide range of job areas, including but not limited to:  in the high schools and preparatory schools, in science and technology agencies,  in the Energy and Environment sector, as graduate assistants in Universities and Colleges, in collecting, analyzing and interpreting geophysical data, in space science research, in the areas of materials science technology and industry, in the radiation protection agency and in medicine as radiation expert and  in the area of Meteorology, in the agency for standardization and national quality control.

Once a student has been admitted into the regular BSc program, under normal circumstances, he or she is required to complete the BSc program in four years.  However, in cases of justifiable academic challenges or other valid reasons, and in accordance with the general graduation requirements of the program, students may extend their study period in line with the University’s legislation.

Postgraduate program

  • MSc in physics
  • Quantum optics
  • Laser spectroscopy
  • Nuclear physics
  • Solid State physics

The MSc program in physics is designed to provide a broader range of student choice for a high-quality education in physics. Its main objective is to produce physicists who are able to work independently with physics at a high level and who can take on many tasks in society and in the business sector. The MSc also allows one to enter educational institutions at different levels and provides a basis for a PhD in physics.

After completing the MSc  in Physics, graduates are capable of undertaking duties and responsibilities in a wide range of job areas, including but not limited to: in teaching Physics in higher institution,  in science and technology agencies, in the Energy and Environment sector, in collecting, analyzing and interpreting physics research data,  in space science research,  in the areas of materials science technology and industry, in the radiation protection agency and in medicine as radiation expert,  in the agency for standardization and national quality control,  in the media as Science communicator and  to undertake research in Physics related areas.

The program is expected to take a minimum of two years. However, in cases of justifiable academic challenges or other valid reasons, and in accordance with the general graduation requirements of the program, students may extend their study period in line with the University’s legislation.

PhD in physics

  • Quantum optics

The PhD program in physics  is to train candidates to produce and publish new knowledge, strengthen their professional expertise in both specific and general fields of physics, and enable them to contribute to the advancement of the discipline. The research mission is pursued by fostering research programs that investigate and develop new knowledge at the cutting edge of science across a wide range of physics disciplines.

After completing the PhD  in Physics, graduates are capable of undertaking duties and responsibilities in a wide range of job areas such as:  teaching physics courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels in higher learning institutions, supervise research projects and carry out independent research works, be employed in non-educational organizations and industries where advanced knowledge of Physics is required, contribute for the development of science and technology  in our country and at international level and develop effective communication skills and ethical responsibilities with the appreciation of cultural diversity.

The duration of the PhD program in Physics is four years. However, in cases of justifiable academic challenges or other valid reasons, and in accordance with the general graduation requirements of the program, students may extend their study period as permitted by the University’s legislation.

Available resources and facilities

The department has three undergraduate laboratories where students conduct experiments that are part of the curriculum in different semesters. There is a Solid-State and Laser Spectroscopy Laboratory for postgraduate research activities. There is also a Computational Laboratory, which both undergraduate and postgraduate students use for computer programming courses and internet access.
