The Department of Sport Sciences is dedicated to the study of human movement, physical activity, and performance, integrating scientific knowledge with practical training to promote health, fitness, and athletic excellence. It provides students with a solid foundation in exercise physiology, biomechanics, sports psychology, coaching, and physical education, supported by hands-on experience in laboratories, training facilities, and community programs. Through teaching, research, and applied practice, the department prepares graduates to contribute in areas such as sports coaching, physical education, rehabilitation, fitness and wellness, and performance enhancement. Its programs aim to develop professionals who advance individual and community well-being while fostering excellence in sports and active lifestyles.

Our Programs

The Department of sport science at Hawassa University runs BSc in a four-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in Sport sciences, MSc in football coaching in a two years of Masters of science in football coaching, MSc in Basketball coaching in a two years of Masters of science in Basketball coaching, MSc in Athletics coaching in a two years of Masters of science in Athletics coaching , MSc in Sport Management in a two years of Masters of science in Sport Management, and PhD in Sport management. In BSc program, the goals are to train our students to be professional, committed, honest, and to have sportsmanship character in deferent sport field. Moreover, in the Master’s program, our students can meet the need of sport professional in the country different sport sectors like football federation, Basketball federation, Athletics federation. These programs combined with theoretical and practical attachment courses which are very important for students to familiarize themselves with the actual situation of the working environment. Furthermore, the PhD program The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Sport Management is a rigorous, research-focused program designed to develop advanced knowledge, critical thinking, and analytical skills in the field of Sport management and Sport organizational studies. The program equips scholars with the ability to generate original research, contribute to academic knowledge, and address complex Sport managerial and organizational challenges in a global context. Students engage in comprehensive coursework covering management theory, research methodology, quantitative and qualitative analysis, Sport organizational behavior, strategy, leadership, human resources, innovation, and related disciplines. The program emphasizes independent inquiry, enabling students to critically examine current theories and practices while developing innovative approaches to Sport management.

Sport science graduates can also universities and different sport research institutes, In addition to local job opportunity, sport science graduates can work internationally like coaching sport clubs, working as Gymnasium instructors, and fitness instructors positions. Moreover, sport science graduates can create job by themselves through application of knowledge and skills such as to be personal trainer for those in need, they can open Gymnasium for the community, and they can also have a chance to coach youths.

The department is equipped with a Stadium, a Basketball court, and a Football field, providing ample facilities for various sports activities and events. The Stadium serves as a central hub for larger gatherings, while the Basketball court offers a dedicated space for basketball enthusiasts. Additionally, the Football field is designed for both practice and competitive play, ensuring that all athletes have access to high-quality sporting environments.
