About us

Background

The College of Natural and Computational Sciences is one of the oldest colleges in Hawassa University established in 1993 E.C by the name Faculty of Natural Sciences.  Currently, the college constitutes one faculty, 10 departments and three research centers:  Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Departments of Biology, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, Physics, Sports Science, Geology, Aquatic Sciences, Fisheries and Aquaculture; and the three centers: Veterinary Clinic, Center for Aquaculture research and training and the Botanical Garden.

The college currently offers a wide range of programs: 15 undergraduate programs, 33 second-degree programs, and 15 third-degree programs. There are a total of 2,637 students enrolled in all programs, with 2,334 students in undergraduate programs (878 in Regular, 1,116 in summer, 296 in weekends, and 34 in the evening programs), 254 in the second-degree programs (96 in regular program, 154 in summer program, and 4 in weekends), and 59 in third-degree students in the regular program.

The college has 206 qualified and highly experienced faculty members, with 58 holding a third degree and 148 holding a second degree. Additionally, there are 33 technical assistants and 89 administrative staff members supporting teaching and other related activities. Furthermore, 71 faculty members (58 with a third degree, 10 with a second degree) are on study leave. With the quality and experience of its faculty members, the college is striving to ensure quality education, research, and community outreach, contributing to the university's vision to become one of the top 10 research universities in Africa.

The College of Natural and Computational Sciences offers various services to the local community in addition to its teaching and research activities. These services include: distributing fish fingerlings to the community through the Center for Aquaculture Research and Education and conducted field visits in 11 districts of the Sidama region and provided trainings to the farmers on fish farming, fish feed, and fishing net preparation contributing to food and nutritional security of the community; providing free veterinary services through the Veterinary Clinic; offering practical laboratory training for high school teachers to improve the quality of education; and providing training to school children through the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) center to increase their interest in science and mathematics, as well as enhance their knowledge and skills in science subjects. The college has also made significant contributions in the fight against the spread of the Covid-19 outbreak. It has prepared and distributed sanitizers and various liquid soaps to the community. The college assisted Mekdella Amba University, which was affected by conflict in the country's north, by providing laboratory equipment worth more than 4,790,340.50 birr. Additionally, the college has provided football training for talented teenagers of under 13 and 15, established a botanical garden, and collected several medicinal, aromatic, and indigenous plants, contributing to the science and realization of the green legacy.
